What is Music Therapy?

According to American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) music therapy is the, "clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

In short, a music therapist uses the qualities of music (Rhythm, Tempo, Melody, Instrumentation, etc.) to create an environment which is unique to each client and effective in meeting their specific goals.

Common Goals in Music Therapy

Music therapy goals are always specific to the client, and often focus on supporting the development of important life skills, such as:

  • ​Increased self-awareness

  • Increased self-esteem

  • Self Expression

  • Development of coping skills

  • Increased socialization skills

  • Anxiety/pain management

  • Cognitive Skills (Attention, memory, problem solving

  • Language Skills (Expressive & Receptive)

  • Physical Development and Rehabilitation

  • Relaxation

Music therapy services can benefit many populations and can be an effective addition to treatment teams across a wide variety of settings. Music Therapists work in areas, such as:

  • Public & Private school systems

  • Special needs programs, including after school, and adult day programs.

  • Hospitals

  • Mental health facilities, including drug rehabilitation.

  • Elderly Care Centers  

  • Community Centers
